Environmental Frontiers Initiative: Javier Mulero

Meet Javier Mulero, the Summer 2019 Environmental Frontiers Intern at the University of Chicago Office of Sustainability. During his internship, he conducted an audit of various on-campus buildings to find opportunities to lower energy consumption, and evaluated the project’s eligibility for the EPA ENERGY STAR® Data Innovation Award — all towards the goal of reducing the University of Chicago’s greenhouse gas emissions by 20 percent by 2025. In addition, Javier built a dashboard in EnergyCAP, Facilities Services’ energy management information system, which shows utility data for those buildings over time.

“There’s lots of opportunity to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and building energy consumption on campus. It just took someone to look at it,” said Javier.

Javier came to the University of Chicago Office of Sustainability by way of the Center for Robust Decision Making on Climate and Energy Policy (RDCEP), co-led by Elisabeth Moyer, Associate Professor of UChicago’s Geophysical Sciences department, where he spent the summer of 2016 as a research intern. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree this summer in Civil and Environmental Engineering from UIUC with a minor in Computer Science, and is currently seeking opportunities in civil, environmental, or water resource engineering based in Denver.

“Everybody was very welcoming, and the internship was a great experience. Staff and faculty were ready to give professional advice, share knowledge of HVAC systems, and more,” he said.

Environmental Frontiers is a collaboration among faculty, students, and staff at the University of Chicago, working together to find innovative ways to build a more sustainable future. Learn more on Mansueto Institute’s website.
